Mother, Summer, I

Philip Larkin

My mother, who hates thunderstorms,
holds up each summer day & shakes
it out suspiciously, lest swarms
of grape-dark clouds are lurking there;
but when the August weather breaks
and rains begin, and brittle frost
sharpens the bird-abandoned air
her worried summer look is lost,

and I her son, though summer born
and summer-loving, none the less
am easier when the leaves are gone
Too often summer days appear
Emblems of perfect happiness
I can't confront: I must await
a time less bold, less rich, less clear:
an autumn more appropriate.

I "gibbered" on this morning about your blog and then it didn't show up. I'll try to remember what I said and "gibber" on again.

Larkin's poem doesn't remind you of me, does it? I've never minded summer storms, but viewed them with awe and respect.

Your "roads traveled" reminded me of Robert Frost's "road less traveled" Which roads would you like to take that you haven't? Something to think and blog about.

I would love to take the "Road to Hana" on Maui in Hawaii--that's an adventure that Joyce and Mark took without me and reminds me of some roads Joyce and I took on an adventure on Old Mission Peninsula.

I-94 for me is first for trips over an hour. Then of course there's Oakville-Waltz Road's lifelong habit. Lots of Grafton runs to Buschs. Your blog is inspirational.

No, it doesn't remind me of you at all. I just like it.

Highway 61 would be a cool road to travel from Minnesota all the way to the south, lots of musical history from that road. Other than that, who knows? It's like that song, when you don't know where your going, any road will take you there...
